A spectacular drug discovery was employed by the police in the Netherlands when a 30-year-old Frenchman was stopped at the wheel of a van. During routine control on the motorway in Rotterdam, the officers came across two coffins that were supposed to contain corpses. But what was in it turned out to be a shocking find: sports bags full of cocaine with a street sales value of around 13 million euros. The driver could not show any transport documents, which is why the coffins were opened, which led to this dramatic discovery, as the "Volksblatt" reported.

In the same context, the ZDF crime experts reported from another huge drug discovery in Germany. In 2023, over 35 tons of cocaine were confiscated in the port of Hamburg, with an estimated sales value of around 2.6 billion euros. These investigations were initiated by information from Colombian authorities that the German investigators on the trail of an organized drug gang. Eighth suspects, including business people from Germany, are suspected of having founded a network of false companies to smuggle cocaine from South America to Europe.

The official efforts show that the international cocaine smuggling over European ports such as Rotterdam and Hamburg has increased in an alarming dimension. Experts warn of a new dimension of drug supply and require improved security measures at the limits. North Rhine-Westphalia's Minister of Justice described the confiscation of the huge amounts of cocaine as "precise chin hooks" for the drug bosses, while the investigators emphasized that cross-border cooperation are essential to effectively counteract this threat.
