Climate change: 359 million people worldwide driven by weather disasters!

The alarming numbers of the climate -related displacement worldwide are terrifying!

The 29th UN climate conference (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan, has brought the shattering reality of climate change to light: Since 2008, an incredible 359 million weather-related displacements have been registered worldwide! According to the current global report on internal display, at least 6.6 million people were sold by weather -related disasters by the end of 2023. This number is only the tip of the iceberg, because many affected people have been driven several times, especially through floods, storms, drought and forest fires, which led to a total of at least 20.3 million compulsory movements a year.

The countries that are most affected are China with 4.6 million and the Philippines with 2.1 million displacements. Typhoon Doksuri, one of the most powerful storms of the season, has torn over a million people in the Philippines from their houses and cost dozens of life. In Africa, Somalia had most displacement with 2 million, caused by the worst floods for decades. These extreme weather events not only affect the environment, but also endanger health and livelihood of the already vulnerable communities.

a worrying increase in weather events

The numbers are alarming: 9.8 million people were driven out by floods and 9.5 million by storms. Drought and forest fires led to a further 491,000 and 435,000 displacements. The increase in such events is obvious; The number of weather -related displacement has increased dramatically since 2008. The floods in particular rose from 272 incidents in 2015 to a terrifying maximum of 1,710 in 2023.

The scientists warn: The man -made climate change has tightened the extreme weather conditions. Pushker Kharecha from Columbia University emphasizes that the worst effects, especially the least developed countries, which have contributed the least to global warming. This injustice is not only a moral dilemma, but also an urgent challenge that requires immediate measures. The COP29 has shown that the current obligations to combat climate change and the associated displacement are far from sufficient.
