An impressive portrait of a Vietnamese woman who sits in a dark, smoky room next to her great -granddaughter and works on a embroidery, won the National Geographic Travel (UK) Photography Competition 2025.
The winning picture
The photo was taken in the province of Lào Cai in Vietnam by the photographer Justin Cliffe, based in Great Britain. It was selected from thousands of submissions and described by the jurors as a representation of a "moment between generations that capture so much beauty and humanity".

"The colors, the light and the textures harmonize extremely well," added the jury in a press release on Thursday.

According to National Geographic, the art of embroidery has been passed on under the Red Dao, an ethnic minority in Vietnam for generations. This tradition shows the cultural meaning and the art of craftsmanship, which is expressed in such pictures.

"The 18 finalists - who were selected from thousands of submissions - have really increased the level of travel photography with their ingenuity and their skills."
