Cheers and hope: Syrian rebels celebrate the fall of Assad!

A dramatic change of power has taken place in Syria when Islamist fighters took control of Damascus and ended President Bashar al-Assad's decades. This turn releases the way for Syrian activists who have started with a large -scale search in the notorious Saidnaya detention center. Hundreds of political prisoners are detained there, including women and children who are kept in secret cells. The members of the Syrian civil protection, known as white helmets, use special dogs and noise sensors to find hidden cells in the basement of the military prison, her director Raid Al Saleh reported on the platform X. This search has so far been unsuccessful, but is continued, as Al Saleh added.

brutality of the detention center

Saidnaya has become known as a "slaughterhouse", notorious for the barbaric methods of guards. Amnesty International documented in 2017 that thousands under Assad were killed in mass execution in this prison. The search for survivors in Saidnaya is borne by the hope that the Islamist fighters who have come to power could support the release of these prisoners. In view of the changed political landscape, the general command of the rebels emphasizes that personal freedom, including freedom of clothing for women, is to be respected in order to build a civilized nation, as was explained in a social media contribution.

Developments in Syria also have international effects. Russia is now facing a "difficult situation", as NTV reported because the loss of the Assad regime weakens the position of the country in the region. Great Britain also eliminates the existing ban of the Syrian rebel group Hayat Tahrir al-Scham (HTS), which has made a decisive contribution to the fall of Assads. These circumstances could redefine the geopolitical balance in the Middle East, while the United States remains militarily present to prevent the influence of the Islamic State.
