A viable Palestinian state stays away despite international pressure
A viable Palestinian state stays away despite international pressure
France, followed by the United Kingdom and now Canada have their economic and geopolitical power used to support the creation of a Palestinian state. This idea is already advocated by more than 140 other countries. The motives are diverse: from a feeling of frustration towards Israel , to indignation to the pictures of hungry Palestiners. Regardless of the backgrounds, the announcements are welcomed by the Palestinians as support for their cause, while the Israeli government rejects it as a reward for terrorism.
The reaction of Donald Trump
US President Donald Trump seems increasingly frustrated to be, especially because of the hunger crisis in Gaza, the Netanyahu denies, but Trump worries. Trump aims to promote peace in the region and at the same time maintain the Nobel Prize for Peace. He wants Saudi Arabia to normalize relationships with Israel to expand the basis created by him as part of the Abraham Agreement between Israel and several Arab countries during his first term. However, Riyadh has made it clear that this cannot be done without a clear path to a Palestinian state.
symbolic support and their effects
The recent steps of Trump's allies, France, Great Britain and Canada, have increasingly appeared in isolation for Israel. A Palestinian founding of the state could help end a war that has cost more than 60,000 Palestinians in Gaza since the brutal attack by Hamas on October 7. In addition, it could enable the return of the hostages that are still captured in Gaza. But one of the greatest challenges is to imagine what a modern Palestinian state could look like, since such a thing has never existed.
history and the Oslo Agreement
When Israel was founded after the Second World War, it quickly received international recognition. This time is remembered by the Palestinians as Al-Naqba, the "catastrophe"-when hundreds of thousands of people fled their homes or were violently driven out. Since then, Israel has expanded its territory considerably, especially during the 1967 Six Day War, when East Jerusalem, the West Jordanland and Gaza brought it under its control, while the Palestinian area was only shrinking.
The idea of a future Palestinian state came closest during the peace negotiations in the 1990s, which became known as Oslo Agreement. Roughly speaking, the planned Palestinian state would be based on the borders of 1967, which was accepted by both Palestinian and Israeli negotiators. The basic idea was to enable some land exchange processes, whereby a piece of land should be given at one point in exchange for the evacuation of an Israeli settlement.Current challenges and resistance
The historical handshake between Israel's prime minister Yitzhak Rabin and the Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, conveyed by the then US President Bill Clinton, is considered one of the triumph of modern diplomacy. But Rabin's murder from a right -wing extremist fanatic in 1995, Israel robbed his peace maker. Although the framework of the OSLO agreements continues in negotiations and science, there is a lack of realistic initiatives today. What was offered at the time can no longer be implemented.
In recent years, Israeli settlements in occupied West Bank have increased massively, often with the support of the Israeli government, which endangers the chances of creating a coherent Palestinian state. In addition, the question arises as to who would rule a future Palestinian state. The Palestinian Authority, which manages parts of the West Bank, is considered weak or corrupt by many Palestinians. Even without all these complications, Netanyahu will not accept a Palestinian state and recently declared that this would be "a starting basis for the annihilation of Israel".
an uncertain view
Some members of his cabinet are even further right, not only demand the rejection of an independent state, but also want to annex the area. These ministers who support Netanyahu have already announced that they would rather make life difficult for the Palestinians in Gaza than to support them, and they would announce the coalition if Netanyahu should only express the idea of giving in the growing international pressure on Israel.
netanyahu shows no signs of withdrawing, and will bear all the pressure measures that are announced by France, Great Britain and others as an honorary badge. Without a reliable partner in the Israeli government, the recognition of a Palestinian state will run into nothing and could even further strengthen Netanyahu. It would be a high price if the result would be that Israel moved the possibility of a Palestinian state into further distance.
With a growing number of angered former partners in the international community, which will probably increase their pressure on Trump, it could be Israel that feels disadvantaged, no matter how much it protests.
