Sturm Bora devastates Greece: two dead and chaos on islands!
Rhodos, Griechenland - Greece is currently shaken by a devastating natural disaster. The storm "Bora" hit large parts of the country last weekend and led to heavy rains and heavy winds. As a result, there were massive floods that not only affected hundreds of houses and streets, but also agricultural areas. The popular holiday islands Rhodes and Lemnos, on which an emergency was called, were particularly affected, since the catastrophe led to evacuations and the failure of the power supply, such as reported.
On Lemnos, two men lost their lives in a flooded village. The rescue workers, supported by the military and local authorities, provided help and evacuated numerous people to the main tourist port. Minister Vassilis Kikilias appealed to the residents of following the evacuation instructions that are transmitted via cell phone notifications. "It is better a thousand times to possibly follow excessive warnings than to see a tragedy in the eye," said Kikilias on television, while at the same time he pushed responsibility for the tightening weather conditions on climate change, like traffic chaos and travel warnings
The heavy weather conditions also led to a complete standstill in rail traffic between Athens and Thessaloniki, while car traffic in Athens was prohibited for 24 hours so as not to hinder the rescue workers. Holidaymakers in Rhodes and Limnos had difficulty getting to the airports because many flights were painted. Although there was no official travel warning, flat -rate travelers were able to cancel their trips free of charge due to the extraordinary circumstances. Individual travelers, on the other hand, face larger challenges because they have to deal with various contractual partners to receive replacement services.
