Metlen secures important raw materials for Europe with € 295.5 million!
Agios Nikolaos, Viotia, Griechenland - Metlen Energy & Metals has made a groundbreaking decision and invests 295.5 million euros in the production of Bauxit, Tonerde and Gallium in an important project in Agios Nikolaos, Greece. This investment will not only significantly increase production capacities, but also enable the production of Gallium, a strategically important metal for Europe, for the first time in industrial production. The CEO of Metlen, Evangelos Mytilineos, emphasized that this project strengthens the self-sufficiency of Europe with critical raw materials and reduces external dependencies, especially with regard to the current Situation in China, which had previously announced gallium-export restrictions, which illustrated the vulnerability of the West.
important production capacities in view
The planned overall production capacity of the project includes 2 million tons of Bauxit, 1.265 million tons of toner and 50 tons of gallium annually. With these materials, Metlen wants to supply European industry and at the same time implement new environmentally friendly technologies to reduce CO2 footprint. According to the current report of Statista , the global gallium-production has been greatly concentrated in recent years, with China being leading. Metlen’s investment could significantly reduce this dependency and significantly promote European self -sufficiency in the field of critical raw materials.
The strategic position of Greece is also emphasized by this project, since it not only supports the regional economy through innovative approaches and comprehensive infrastructure developments, but also shaping the future of metallurgy in Europe. The commissioning of the new production lines is planned for 2026, while the expansion of the tonerde and gallium production should start gradually from 2027. With this initiative, Metlen pursues the goal of sustainably supplying the European market and thus taking a key role in the global raw material economy.
