Warning! Neurological dog syndrome through chewing bones - what is behind it?

In a troubling trend, dogs have been experiencing terrifyingly heavy neurological symptoms in several European countries for several months. Signs such as uncontrolled whine, barking, sudden panic attacks and even epileptic seizures make dog owners and veterinarians alike. According to Nina Meyerhoff from the Hanover University of Veterinary Medicine, toxins in certain cattle chewing bones could be the cause of the phenomenon known as the "werewolf syndrome". This could not only be limited to individual products, but also turns out to be a Europe -wide problem that remains unsolved. In particular, reviews show that these symptoms were recently documented in France, such as watson.ch reported.

recalls in several countries

The alarming reports have already led to recalls in Finland, the Netherlands and Denmark, where products from various brands were removed from the market. The Dutch food and goods supervisory authority (NVWA) warned of the chewing bones of the "Barkoo" brand, which are available via the Zooplus online shop. In this context, too, chewing bones from Denmark were called back, as a consumer reported on conspicuous changes in behavior in their animals. These product recalls are intended to prevent other dogs from being at risk, such as krone.at informed.

The exact origin of the harmful toxin remains unclear, but there is initial findings that there could be a connection to a manufacturer in China that supplies various dealers with chewing bones. Meyerhoff made it clear that the symptoms are usually not fatal and usually subside again after a few days or weeks. In extremely excited animals, temporary sedative medication could be used, while some dogs were initially put to safety due to the serious symptoms.
