Peace talks in Paris: The bloodshed in Ukraine must end!

Dnipro, Ukraine - On April 17, 2025 at lunchtime, several news agencies reported on a devastating drone attack on the Ukrainian city of Dnipro. At least three people, including a child, lost their lives, and 28 others were injured, including four children. The attack led to several fires and considerable damage to residential buildings, including at a student dormitory. The Ukrainian Air Force had previously localized Russian combat drones about the cities of Krywyj Rih and Charkiw. In a disturbing context, there was also a rocket attack on the IIIUM, which injured two people.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and the special sent Steve Wittkoff at the parallel discussions in France about the situation in the Ukraine conflict. These talks followed a meeting of Wittkoff with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the previous week. The goal of these diplomatic efforts is to end the Russian-Ukrainian war and stop bloodshed. While Trump and Wittkoff believe that Putin is ultimately interested in peace, European countries are pursuing a contrary approach: they want to support and strengthen Ukraine militarily before possible negotiations.

international dimension of the conflict

The international dimension of the conflict is becoming increasingly complex. According to SWP-Berlin.org has been internationalized in recent years, whereby western countries are deep into military, political and economic support for the Ukraine are involved. At the same time, a group of support has formed around Russia, which is made up of countries such as Iran and North Korea. These connections not only strengthen the military use of Russia, but also destabilize other conflict regions and reduce the ability of Russia to influence geostrategic developments in the Middle East as a moderating factor.

Russia's dependence on Iranian arms deliveries and military cooperation with North Korea also have far -reaching consequences for the stability of the region. This collaboration could enable Tehran and Pyongyang to access Russian nuclear weapon technology and thus endangers the entire international security system.

Ukrainian defense capacities

On the Ukrainian side, there is worry about the ongoing dependence on foreign armaments deliveries. President Selenskyj reported that Ukraine now produces over 40 percent of its weapons itself and produces more than a thousand different types of weapons. Despite this progress, however, the country remains dependent on western support, especially in the procurement of tanks and air defense systems.

The current situation shows how fragile the situation in Ukraine and the further international community is. The conflict has far -reaching effects on global nutritional security and international energy markets. The destabilization initiated by Russia has not only regional, but also international dimensions and forces the global community to deal with the challenges that arise from this war.
