Femicide alarm: 60% of women's murders by partners or family!
A terrifying report by the United Nations reveals that the home is the most dangerous place for women and girls! In 2023, around 85,000 women and girls were killed worldwide, and shocking 60 percent of this murders were carried out by intimate partners or family members. This means that on average, 140 women and girls were brutally torn out of life every day!
The UN study, which was published on the occasion of the international day to eliminate violence against women, shows that no place is safe from this extreme form of gender violence. "Women and girls are affected everywhere," warns the report. The Situation in Africa is particularly alarming, where an estimated 21,700 women and girls were killed by intimate partners or family members. This corresponds to a frightening rate of 2.9 victims per 100,000 inhabitants!
global statistics and regional differences
The numbers are also alarming in the Americas and Oceania, with 1.6 and 1.5 victims per 100,000. In contrast, the rates in Asia and Europe are significantly lower at 0.8 and 0.6 per 100,000. The report emphasizes that most of the murders of women in Europe and the Americas in the private sector are done by intimate partners, while male murder victims are often killed outside of home and family.
Although men and boys make up the majority of murder victims, women and girls are disproportionately affected by fatal violence in the private sector. Almost 60 percent of all women who were deliberately killed in 2023 were victims of intimate partner or family murders. Despite international efforts to prevent this violence, the number of murders of women and girls remains alarming. The UN emphasizes that many of these acts are the result of repeated episodes of gender -specific violence and can be prevented by timely and effective interventions.
