Gas stocks in Germany: Would you be sufficient for the winter of 2024/25?
The current situation of the gas storage in Germany remains tense and decisive for the winter of 2024. According to the Allgäuer Zeitung is Fill level of the gas storage on December 12, 2024 a total of 87.10 percent, which corresponds to a decline of 0.77 percent compared to the previous day. However, this level is 6 percentage points above the average from 2017 to 2021 and signals that Germany is expected to experience no bottlenecks in gas supply this winter. The head of the Federal Network Agency, Klaus Müller, emphasized that if the memory was full, the gas could be sufficient for about two cold winter months.
In the past few months, gas consumption in Germany has been below the average values compared to 2018 to 2021. Data from the NDR show that the average daily consumption by 3,548 gigawatt hours was 12 percent lower than on the average of the previous year Time. The decline in gas consumption depends heavily on the temperatures; Warmer winter ensure lower consumption. With the stop of gas deliveries from Russia, Germany now has to cover its imports from Norway, the Netherlands and Belgium, with new liquid gas terminals being connected to the supply of the country.
forecasts and challenges
Since the gas consumption in winter 2024/2025 is assessed as a “moderate to extensive”, it is expected that the gas storage facilities could be empty at the low temperatures in February 2025. It is crucial to reach the storage goals early. The necessary filling levels for the coming winter period have been reached in time, which underlines the security of supply. Nevertheless, economical handling of gas remains important, since the consumption sometimes depends heavily on climatic conditions.
