Vienna starts hydrogen era: world premiere for emission-free bus!

With today's day, March 27, 2025, Vienna heralds a new era of emission -free mobility. The Viennese lines have presented a new hydrogen test bus from Hyundai. This is a significant step because it is the first hydrogen buses in line operations in the city. Part of the strategy to massively reduce emissions without making cuts in the quality of the offer.

The hydrogen Lower Flurbus, which was presented in the Leopoldau bus garage, is the first vehicle worldwide to be equipped with a 700-bar technology. In contrast to other manufacturers who mainly use the 350-bar technology, this innovative system offers a higher range that can compete with diesel buses. The vehicle has a range of almost 500 kilometers and is therefore ideal for daily line traffic.

technical Details and funding

The 12 -meter -long bus, a product of cooperation with the Slovenian manufacturer Tam, has a 90 kW fuel cell and a 245 hp electric motor. It offers space for 79 people, including 27 seats and a wheelchair place. Another highlight are the most modern driver assistance systems that ensure additional safety in road traffic. The refueling takes place at the hydrogen petrol station in the Leopoldau bus garage, where both 350 bar and 700 bar are offered.

The investment in these hydrogen buses is promoted by EU funds via the EBIN program, which underlines the importance of the EU for the transition to environmentally friendly mobility. The Viennese lines are planning for the summer of 2025 to put another 10 hydrogen buses from the manufacturer Caetanobus into operation, as well as new hybrid buses that are operated with both hydrogen and electrical

strategic goal of the city of Vienna

Mobility City Councilor Ulli Sima emphasizes the decisive role of this innovation for the climate goals of Vienna. The city strives to be climate -neutral by 2040. The implementation of the hydrogen strategy is an important step to achieve the ambitious climate goals. At the same time, it is important to further improve the transport system. The approaches include avoiding traffic, laying traffic to emission -free alternatives and improving the existing infrastructure.

In addition, the expansion of public transport and the creation of infrastructures for cyclists and pedestrians should be forced measures. As the Energy Agency emphasizes, the development of emission -free drives is also necessary in heavy traffic in order to reduce the dependence on fossil fuels and to promote renewable energy sources.

The Viennese lines use their measures to make an important sign of the future of urban mobility and actively contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The combination of hydrogen technology and public transport could be groundbreaking not only in Vienna, but also in other cities.

For Vienna, hydrogen era is not only technological progress, but also a social confession to more sustainability and a better quality of life for citizens.
