Scandal about ex-Vice Minister: Hungary grants asylum despite accusations of corruption!
Poland's former Vice-Justice Minister Marcin Romanowski, who is sought with a European arrest warrant for suspicion of corruption, has received political asylum in Hungary. Romanowski is accused of redirecting millions of millions to victims of crime. The Hungarian asylum was convicted as an hostile act by the Polish government. Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski spoke of a threat to the EU principles and announced legal steps against Hungary, as the district newspaper Böblinger Bote Romanowski, who denies all allegations, was charged with membership in a criminal association and other financial offenses.
refugee crises and EU guidelines
In the meantime, an alliance of European human rights organizations warns of a new crisis regulation on the asylum policy of the EU, which could massively restrict the rights of refugees at the external borders. This regulation could allow the member states to drastically violate the fundamental rights of asylum seekers under the conditions of "crises" and "instrumentalization". According to Frankfurter Rundschau it is feared that human dignity is endangered by insufficient accommodation and insufficient health care. NGO bosses warn that these measures undermine the common European asylum system and question compliance with international refugee conventions.
The EU is under pressure to find uniform solutions for upcoming challenges in the escape and asylum area. However, the regulations that have now been discussed show that a narrow line often runs between the protection of human rights and political agendas. Dealing with Romanowski could serve as an example of the tensions within the EU that is reflected in their asylum policy.
