In the middle of political turbulence, the Union Cyclist Internationale (UCI) is firmly at the implementation of the world's road bike championships in Rwanda, which are to take place from September 21 to 28, 2025. Despite international criticism and strict sanctions of the EU against Rwanda because of the support of the rebel group M23, which is active in the Democratic Republic of Congo, according to UCI President David Lappartient, there is no plan B. Lappartant emphasized that the sport should remain neutral and that the implementation in Africa is very important to him, as he is looking forward to cyclingnews announced. However, the political situation already has an impact on the event and the participation of teams. The weather has led to a cancellation of the Tour of Rwanda's final stage, which increases the concerns about the security on site. Teams like Soudal-Quickstep have decided not to send their young teams to Rwanda in view of the proximity to the conflict areas. According to Laola1 , the Austrian Foreign Ministry sees the situation as a high security risk.
In addition to the safety problems, high costs burden the participation. Hotel prices partly exceed those in European cities and the necessary vaccinations represent further hurdles. In the meantime, Rwanda is accused of creating a positive image with investments in sport, despite the oppression of oppositional and the continuing poverty of the population.
