Italian auto industry in the crisis: production at a record low!

In 2024, the Italian auto industry experienced a dramatic decline that accepted alarming proportions. According to the FIM-CISL union, production has fallen over an overwhelming 46 percent and reaches the lowest level since 1956 with just 475,900 vehicles. The decline affects not only car production, but also that of commercial vehicles, which illustrates the critical position. In 2023, around 300,000 vehicles were built, which makes the drastic decline even clearer, as krone.at reported.

challenges for Stellantis and the industry

The Konsortium Stellantis, the fourth largest car manufacturer worldwide and operator of the most important factories in Italy, faces serious challenges. A weak sales of electric cars, political uncertainties and the growing competition from Chinese manufacturers are increasing the company. Especially in Turin at the Mirafiori location, production collapsed by 70 percent, while Maserati production even decreased by alarming 79 percent. The union now demands a review of the emission goals for 2025 from the EU to help the industry, such as the reporting of n-tv.de Show.

At the urging of the unions, Stellantis announced that it would invest two billion euros in Italy by 2025. Nevertheless, the uncertainty regarding future production numbers remains. The Italian government is aiming to increase vehicle production in the country to over one million units by 2026. Nevertheless, the responsible manager Jean-Philippe Imparato expressed concerns and predicted another year with falling production numbers. The GAU in the car industry could also go hand in hand with massive layoffs if not countermeased quickly.
