Ireland celebrates the record surplus thanks to Apple tax payment!
Ireland has a significant budget surplus of 12.8 billion euros, which is largely due to a tax payment of Apple. This additional payment amounts to almost 11 billion euros and has significantly strengthened the financial resources of the country. The Irish Ministry of Finance announced that this surplus is to be considered in a comparable context, such as the initial costs of basic child protection in Germany, which were estimated at 12 billion euros.
The tax payment is the result of a legal dispute that Apple lost in September against the EU Commission before the European Court of Justice (ECJ). This legal dispute dealt with tax breaks that were granted to the company in Ireland. The EU Commission had regarded these benefits as a distortion of competition and asked Apple to pay a total of 13 billion euros in taxes plus interest. After the judgment of the ECJ, the EU Commission confirmed its position and requested that the additional payment.
Apple's financial situation remains stable
Despite the enormous tax payment, Apple reported a profit of 13.5 billion euros for the relevant quarter in October. This shows that despite the financial obligations from the legal dispute, the company is still able to generate considerable profits.
In summary, it can be said that Apple's tax payment not only positively influences the Irish state finances, but also increases the discussion of the competitive discussion within the EU by corporate taxation and fair trade practices.
