A cable for everything: EU conquers the charger jungle!

From today, December 28, 2024, a pioneering regulation applies in the European Union: All new mobile electrical devices must have a USB-C connection. This measure, which has been decided by the EU, aims to eliminate the so -called cable scales and to protect the environment by reducing electronic waste. According to a report by the 5min.at , the Austrian National Council introduced the radio investment surveillance law on May 15, 2024 to adapt to the EU directive. The legislator would like to ensure that consumers no longer have to buy an additional charging cable for every new device. This is particularly relevant for smartphones, tablets, digital cameras and even e-book readers.

uniform standard for devices

The new regulation not only reduces the cablewar, but also brings considerable financial savings for consumers. Up to 250 million euros are to be saved annually, as numerous different chargers no longer have to be purchased. According to the Tagesschau , it is now a mandatory for all manufacturers to equip new devices with a USB-C connection if they have an output of up to 100 watts. In addition, electrical appliances can also be offered without a charging cable, which represents a further relief for consumers.

The implementation of this guideline is the result of years of negotiations within the EU that took over 15 years. Apple in particular stubbornly opposed the reform by arguing that the regulation of innovation and progress, especially in the area of wireless charging, hindered. Nevertheless, the EU remains steadfast: devices with a wireless charging function must also have a USB-C connection to be launched.
