Corruption in the small town: the auditor and the big spectacle!
In the latest staging of Nikolai Gogol's "The Revisor", which was brought to the stage at the academy theater, a small place and strong political issues meet. Under the direction of Mateja Koležnik, the piece is shaped by a lavishly designed stage design that is reminiscent of a rocket and becomes a backdrop of a city, the residents of which are in chic fur. The situation escalates when the devilish rumor arises that a auditor is in the city, which means that the simple -minded mayor and the citizens panic. According to the Report by vienna.at the confusion is driven by slapstick situations and funny dialogues, while the characters try to go to the supposed exams hide.
The presentation of the revision system is accompanied by absurd comedy and intensive acting moments. Tim Werths plays the apparent auditor who arranges arrogant to the citizens while trying to turn bribes in the form of gifts and even their own daughter. This bitter reality of corruption and grievances, which are not only in the small city, but also in the larger context, is taken seriously by the director as part of the story. As stated in the Burgtheater report, the action is strongly reminiscent of the real involvement between politics and business, but without becoming too serious.
The first one and a half hours of the piece are rather slow until the characters come to the fore soulful and urgent snapshots in the second half. The events are shaped by a mixture of humorous and serious encounters, such as a seductive game between the mayor and the supposed auditor, which ensures unforgettable scenes. In a theater performance, which is supposed to stimulate both laughter and thinking, the question of morality and ethics in society remains in the room.
