Vienna relies on cleanliness: Wastewatcher take stock and look ahead!
The Viennese waste vists of the 48s have been committed to cleanliness in the city for many years. Next Wednesday, April 2, 2025, City Councilor Jürgen Czernohorszky will take stock of the past year together with five district heads and give a view of the upcoming challenges. On this occasion, media representatives are invited to a film and photo shoot that takes place in 1082 Vienna at 11:15 a.m.
The media appointment is visited by a large number of prominent participants, including the district heads Stefanie Lamp, Dietmar Baurecht, Thomas Steinhart, Marcus Franz and Christine Dubravac-Widholm. The event is an important step to inform the public about infrastructural progress and future measures in the context of Vienna's waste management.
climate protection and waste management in Vienna
The city of Vienna has established a comprehensive climate protection program for over 20 years. The strategic environmental examination (SUP) for the Vienna waste avoidance program and the waste management plan for 2025-2030 is currently being carried out. This strategy is aimed at setting concrete goals for avoiding waste, recruiting value and climate protection in accordance with the Austrian circulatory business strategy. A central goal is to use all municipal waste in the future without using unused landfill.
The opening of a new accommodation for employees of the 48er in Simmering, which is the first building in Vienna, is particularly noticeable. This innovative construction project is not only environmentally friendly, but also part of the zero waste and circulatory business strategy, which is anchored in the city's climate block. In addition, the building was equipped with a greening, photovoltaic systems and electric charging stations, which reduces the use of primary raw materials and reduces climate-relevant emissions.
Promotion of the circular economy
Viennese waste management focuses on measures that improve the city's CO2 balance. These include the installation of photovoltaic systems and large -scale heat pumps at the locations of the disposal systems and the ambitious project E_OS, which makes the Viennese sewage treatment plant energy positive. This sewage treatment plant needs more than 1 % of the Vienna Energy -produced electricity and delivers annual values of approx. 8.5 GWh of electricity and 27.5 GWh heat.
Another central element of Viennese waste management is the EU requirement to increase the recycling rate for plastic packaging to at least 55 % by 2030. From January 1, 2025, a nationwide deposit system for plastic bottles and beverage cans will also be introduced, which is considered an additional measure to avoid waste and strengthening the circular economy in Vienna. These strategic developments offer promising approaches to reduce resource consumption and significantly reduce CO2 emissions.
The continuous reduction of the residual waste per inhabitant already shows the first successes of the implemented measures. The Vienna waste management plan and the waste avoidance concept are therefore not only milestones for the city of Vienna, but also for the required ecological responsibility in waste management in general.
