Vienna reaches garbage-autarkie: 100% recycling and climate protection in focus!
Wien, Österreich - Vienna has successfully tried to use self -sufficient and sustainable waste utilization and takes care of the entire garbage. At a press conference in the "Pfaffenau" recycling facility, Jürgen Czernohorszky (SPÖ) emphasized the important role of the city in waste disposal and utilization. All disposal systems are located within the city limits and are subject to the local government. All the garbage in Vienna is used in a climate -friendly manner, there is no landfill.
The magistrate department 48 (MA 48) is responsible for the fact that 100 % of the settlement waste in Vienna is used, fermented, prepared and composted. No residual waste has been deposited in the city since 2009 - only the residues of the incineration plants are deposited in the 22nd district. This enables a significant CO2 reduction: The thermal recovery saves 250 kg CO2 equivalent per tonne residual waste compared to deposit, which causes 2,400 kg CO2 equivalents.
sustainable waste management and energy generation
In Vienna there are four waste incineration plants available that also dispose of diapers, medication residues and FFP2 masks. Both district heating as well as electricity and long -distance cold are obtained from the residual waste, which replaces fossil fuels. At this point it should be emphasized that Vienna provides 460,000 apartments and 7,000 commercial operations with district heating. The Pfaffenau waste incineration plant alone produces electricity for 25,000 households.
To avoid environmental damage, residues in the systems are "reduced". It is striking that Vienna took third place in the separate garbage collection compared to other capitals - behind Tallinn and Luxembourg. Despite a population increase of 20 %, the drop in the head in Vienna has decreased since 2005. In 2024, each inhabitant produced 50 kg less residual waste than in 2005. Czernohorszky has announced that it would continue to pursue the path for waste avoidance.
strategic environmental examination and circular economy
In May 2023, the strategic environmental exam for the Vienna Waste Avoidance program and the Vienna Waste Management Plan for 2025-2030 began. The aim is to determine the strategic direction of Viennese waste management, with concrete goals and implementation steps. The focus is on maximizing the circular economy and the promotion of the separate collection of waste. All of these measures are part of the Austrian circulatory business strategy.
A central topic in this process is to extract phosphorus from sewage sludge ash. It is also ensured that disposal security and self -sufficiency remain permanently guaranteed. The process is supported by the MA 48, the administration, NGOs and relevant stakeholders such as the Boku and the University of Leoben. The final results of the process should be available by 2024.
The Vienna Waste Management Act (Wr. AWG) forms the basis for the collection and removal of garbage and waste materials and obliges the city to use environmentally friendly materials in procurement. It also includes requirements for the creation of waste concepts and the use of reusable products at events. Vienna is committed to the circular economy and the Zero Waste principle, which aims not to waste resources and reduce the amounts of waste.
Overall, Vienna pursues the vision of a city without waste, in which all the unavoidable waste is completely exploited. By implementing these measures and strategies, the city becomes an exemplary example of sustainable waste management.
