Kiel sets standards: New sewage sludge burning system starts!
In Kiel, an important project for the recovery of phosphorus from sewage sludge is launched, which is funded by the Schleswig-Holstein state government with 17.7 million euros. According to euwid recycling Integrated, built until 2028 and put into operation in 2029. This innovative system, which is carried out by MPK GmbH & Co. KG, a cooperation between Remondis and the waste incineration of Kiel, ensures the sustainable disposal of 50 percent of the sewage sludge from all over Schleswig-Holstein.
technology and capacity
The heart of the system forms the Tetraphos® process, which was developed by Remondis and is already being tested in Hamburg. As zfk.de , the new distillery will generate around 48,600 megawatt hours of heat every year, which are fed into the Kiel district heating network. This heat supplies about 4,000 households with CO2-neutral energy. With a capacity of approximately 30,000 tons of dry substance per year, the system will guarantee comprehensive disposal security and thus reduce the dependence on imported phosphorus.
Kiel's mayor Ulf Kämpfe emphasized the high importance of the project for climate protection and resource conservation, while Environment Minister Tobias Goldschmidt emphasized the facility as a "milestone for gentle resource consumption". The system is not only an important building block in the Schleswig-Holstein waste management plan, but also reduces harmful emissions, which benefits the environment.
