600 households share their electricity: the new energy future in East Tyrol!

The trend towards renewable energies is becoming increasingly important in East Tyrol and Upper Carinthia. On June 10, 2025, Bertram Steiner, Managing Director of Agetech Smart Electric, visited the Irschenner Christian Hassler, who is interested in membership in a ** renewable energy community (EEG) **. Hassler already has a photovoltaic system and plans to share its excess electricity with neighbors. These communities offer individuals and companies the opportunity to obtain and share energy from renewable sources, which is an important step towards sustainable energy supply.

In August 2024,

Steiner founded the "EEG/BEG Smart Energy Austria" association, which now organizes over 600 members in seven energy communities. In East Tyrol and Upper Carinthia, households benefit from attractive feed -in tariffs and affordable prices. Membership can be easily requested online. The association takes over the monthly billing and ensures that both electricity generators and consumers are integrated into the EEGs.

feed -in remuneration and cost structure

In the different regions there are numerous hydropower plants that are already cooperating with the EEGS. Around 130 hydropower plants in the district produce electricity, with 10% of these producers already share their electricity with the EEGs. Consumers in these communities pay net 9.50 cents per kWh, while feeders receive 9.00 cents for their fed -up stream. One of the great advantages for consumers is the reduction of the network fee by 28%, in addition, the renewable subsidy contribution and the electricity tax.

The tariffs and the associated savings are aimed at promoting the active participation of the citizens in the energy transition. This initiative not only supports the energy transition, but also represents an economic decision to help shape the future.

Financial incentives for members

In addition to the tariffs already mentioned, members benefit from various financial incentives such as the elimination of the Renewable subsidy contribution, the exemption from the electricity tax and the reduction of network charges. These regulations have applied to electricity from all renewable sources since 01.07.2022. The system usage fee regulation, which has been in force since 01.11.2021, provides for a reduction in network charges by up to 64%, depending on the level of the network level.

adequate structures are necessary to ensure a successful energy community. These structures also come with challenges, especially with regard to imbalances between producers and consumers who have to be compensated for by waiting lists. Nevertheless, progress in the region is encouraging.

global trends in energy production

Developments in East Tyrol and Upper Carinthia are in harmony with global trends. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), renewable energies already covered almost 19% of global final energy consumption in 2021. Hydropower plays a crucial role here, especially in countries such as Sweden and Brazil, where the proportion of renewable energies is remarkably high. The world energy council reported that in 2023 the global electricity generation from renewable energies increase to 9,029 terawatt hours, which corresponds to an increase of 5% compared to the previous year.

In summary, it can be said that the initiatives in East Tyrol and Upper Carinthia not only offer local advantages, but also make a contribution to the global energy transition. With an active participation in renewable energy communities, households and companies can achieve significant savings and at the same time contribute to reducing CO2 emissions.
