Koralmahn: In 45 minutes from Graz to Klagenfurt - a century project!

The Koralmahn, after almost 26 years of construction, is about to complete and promises a revolutionary transport connection between Graz and Klagenfurt. From December 2025, the journey between the two state capitals will be reduced to just 45 minutes. This major project is of particular importance, since it not only improves mobility, but could also strengthen economic relations in the region. ÖBB General Director Andreas Matthä describes the upcoming start of operation as a historical moment for the infrastructure, since it marks the first regular journey through the Koralm tunnel and introduces a high-speed route of 130 kilometers that crosses different mountain valleys

The commissioning phase of the Koralbahn includes extensive test drives. In the year before the official start, over 70 test drives are planned, which will be more than 15,000 kilometers. These tests are crucial to ensure that the route works under extreme conditions, at speeds of up to 250 km/h and a careful test of the train security system. The infrastructure is also brought up to date, with the new transport connection at the West Styria station, also completed by spring 2025, playing an important role. This station will offer nine tracks and 450 parking spaces and ensure seamless connections to the network of cycle paths and electromobility.

economic opportunities through the Koralbahn

The Koralm Railway is not only regarded as a commuter connection, but also as an economic catalyst. With the faster connection between Graz and Klagenfurt, a new living and economic area is created, which, according to Matthä, will also favor the settlement of new companies. The role of the Koralbahn is particularly emphasized as part of a trade axis, which could promote strong economic conditions through its connection to Poland, the Czech Republic and Northern Italy. Federal Minister Leonore Gewessler sees this project essential support for the mobility turnaround and climate protection.

The focus is currently on a smooth running of the test drives and the training of the entire staff, which will be responsible for the operation of the new route. The preparations are therefore comprehensive to ensure the smooth and safe start of the Koralbahn, which could significantly change the life realities of the people in the region, as has already been made from and
