Battery production started in Nuremberg: 400 jobs and 250 million euros investment!
Nürnberg, Deutschland - On April 14, 2025, MAN Truck & Bus GmbH in Nuremberg officially started the series production of high-voltage batteries for electric trucks and buses. The opening ceremony took place in the presence of prominent guests, including the Bavarian Prime Minister Dr. Markus Söder as well as Minister of Economics Hubert Aiwanger and other representatives from politics and business. This significant initiative marks a decisive step in the electrification of the transport sector.
The investment of MAN amounts to a total of around 250 million euros, which is more than twice as much as planned. This significant increase in the funds has led to securing around 400 jobs. In order to support these additional investments, the Free State of Bavaria supports the initiative with around 18 million euros from a total volume of 150 million euros. In addition, 30 million euros flow into battery research at the location, whereby the focus is on cell chemistry, battery safety and aging behavior.
technology and production
The new battery is highly automated and relies on modular production systems that do without classic assembly line. This enables flexible and efficient production. High-free transport systems and digital controls guarantee high quality and safety standards, while each battery is subjected to strict tests. These tests include 23 test programs with a total of around 400 parameters to ensure the quality of the batteries produced.
The production is designed for an annual production capacity of 50,000 battery packs, but can be raised to up to 100,000 units. You produce batteries in three form factors that were specially developed for city buses (Man Lion’s City E) and electric trucks (ETGL, ETGS, ETGX). In order to maximize the performance and safety of the batteries, the NMC cell technology (nickel-mangan cobalt) is used and implemented an intelligent battery management system.
future developments
The series production of the new MAN ETRUCK models will begin in June 2025 in Munich, which represents another milestone for the expansion of electromobility in the commercial vehicle industry. According to a report by Capgemini, the demand for electrical drives in the coming years is expected to increase significantly, which underlines the relevance of this investment. The company thus follows the global trend towards sustainability and electrification in the traffic sector.
The commitment of MAN in Nuremberg is an essential step towards a more environmentally friendly future and illustrates the role of Bavarian industry in the transformation of mobility.
