BAMF plans to return: 4,000 euros for Syria returnees!
In an epochal turn, the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) wants to drastically facilitate Syrian migrants! Finally, after the fall of the Assad regime, Syrians should get the chance to return to their homeland in a legal and supported manner. The RES return program RES/GARP, previously closed to Syrians, is expanded by lavish support of up to 4,000 euros per family. Travel expenses up to 200 euros per person will also be taken over to make the start of the new old home easier, such as the Junge Freiheit reported.
But the highly acclaimed program encounters mixed reactions. On the one hand, there are cheering voices that demand that voluntary returnees should receive urgently needed help. On the other hand, Lawand Kiki from Syria Reporting Center e.V. warns of the risks of a rash return policy without clever strategies. In recent years, some Syrians, with the support of individual federal states, have returned home: 64 in 2022, 75 in 2023 and so far 49 in the current year.
controversy about the political thrust
The planned innovation is heavily discussed politically. Especially within the Union and the AfD, there are loud demands for an accelerated implementation of these return measures. But Greens boss Felix Banaszak sharply criticizes this as a "reflective drainage". It is clear that the return policy gets under fire from several directions, with experts warning of rash steps. And yet: the debate continues! Different views collide, while the question remains what a humane and legally secured return strategy could look like.
The role of security
But the international organization for migration also had initially deleted Syria from its list due to the still tense security situation. These aspects must flow into the considerations. Nevertheless, the Federal Office remains optimistic that a positive development in the sense of those willing to return can be designed through financial support and clear rules.
It is clear that this step could not only be a significant turn in Germany's migration policy, but also significantly changes the lives of numerous people. It remains to be seen whether these measures prove to be successful, but the direction has been hit - with all its explosiveness and the associated challenges.
Further information on the ambivalent attitude towards these plans and how they could continue to develop are in a deeper insight, which also from Young Freedom is delivered. In the meantime, the discussion remains open and the developments to keep an eye on.
