Counts the winter birds: Neustadter citizens tackle!

The "hour of winter birds" is a hands -on campaign that was created by the Naturschutzbund (NABU). This annual campaign, which has been taking place for 15 years, invites citizens in Neustadt to collect data on bird population in their gardens next weekend. Wolfram Husemann, the chairman of NABU in Neustadt, hopes for a participation of around 100 people.

In 2021, 105 gardens in Neustadt have already participated in the count, while only 49 gardens were recorded in the previous year. Throughout Germany, a total of 90,000 people took part in the last count, whereby the record year 2021 with 164,000 participants stand out. The next count will take place from January 10th to 12th, 2025, whereby the participants should choose one hour to count birds in their home garden or on the balcony.

In the counting, only the highest number of a bird species that is visible at the same time should be noted. It is important that the observations are carried out exclusively in your own garden or on the balcony and not on a walk or in the forest. The focus is on widespread species such as house sparrow, cabbage and blue credits. The data collected serve to monitor the inventory of these frequent species. The field sparrow in particular is on a pre -warning list due to its decline in existence.

The counts also provide valuable references to the weather conditions and the living conditions in gardens. The biodiversity is also influenced by available feed sources. Husemann found that the bird species depend heavily on the environment. In Mußbach and at the Hornbachturm in Neustadt, nesting opportunities for jackdaws were created, which serves the nature conservation associations as an indicator for their success.
