Weidel praises Hungary: On the way to new German politics?
Budapest, Ungarn - Alice Weidel, the Chancellor candidate of the AfD, gave a praise about Hungary when she visited Budapest and described the country as a model. "Hungary is the bulwark against illegal migration," she emphasized during a press conference with Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. Orbán, who previously held a certain distance from the AfD, explained that everything had now changed and that it was time to intensify the relationships with the AfD. He pointed out that the AfD in surveys now reached 20 percent of the votes and therefore cannot be ignored, such as Oe24.at reported.
The Hungarian Prime Minister perceived the meeting as an opportunity to criticize the EU and its economic policy, since in his opinion they disabled economic growth. Weidel praised the Hungarian government for its independent attitude and promised that the AfD would follow the "path" of Hungary in the event of a government participation in Germany. "Hungary is a symbol of reason, sovereignty and freedom of expression," she said. Contrary to his earlier reluctance, Orbán signaled that he was interested in a stronger cooperation with the AfD, especially in view of the changing political landscape in Germany, as well as ZDF reported.
During the meeting, Weidel was optimistic about the future of the AfD and called for a reform of the EU structures. Orbán explained that a strategic partnership with the AfD was in the interests of Hungary. In the middle of this political harmonization, a Hungarian member of the Hungarian visited Weidel's visit and criticized the invitation by pointing out that populists are often seen as "fascists in democracy". These developments could have significant consequences for relationships between Germany and Hungary and the political landscape in Europe.Details | |
