Traffic chaos in Lüneburg: Who wins the fight for the streets?
Lüneburg. in Lüneburg fuses it! The city splits the heated debate about future traffic planning in two camps: on one side there are cyclists and pedestrians who call for more space and safety on the streets. On the other hand, drivers and the local economy fear their mobility and warn of an impending business yellow in the city center. The fronts are hardened and politics is in the middle of the storm!
In the last council meeting there was a surprising end of the shoulder between the SPD, CDU and FDP, which for the time being stopped the implementation of the controversial sustainable urban mobility plan (Nump). Greens and the left are outraged, after all, numerous citizens worked on this concept. The dispute escalates: While the Greens and Leftists are demanding a rapid redistribution of the traffic areas to strengthen bicycle traffic, the other factions prefer to push the topic onto the long bench and check each measure individually. "Concerns of the economy have the same importance as those of traffic lobby groups," says the change in the change of the three parties.
Demonstration on November 16
The waves hit up! The Verkehrsclub Germany (VCD) and the general student committee (AStA) of the university are pushing for a quick implementation of the nump. "We need measures for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport," demands AStA spokesman Theo Lohse. But the opponents also mobilize: On November 16, a demonstration against the nump is planned, organized by a self -proclaimed “Lüneburg alliance for balanced traffic planning”. The opponents warn that the plan could massively restrict the mobility freedom of the citizens. Around 50 participants are expected to go on the streets for their view.
