Thuringian open -air museum inspires with a record visit and new exhibitions!

The Thuringian open -air museum in Hohenfelden closed its doors on November 3 and says goodbye to the winter break. But before the shutters were finally folded down, numerous visitors flocked to the fascinating world of history on this long weekend. With around 31,000 guests this season, 6,000 more than in the previous year, 2023 was a complete success for the museum.

Visitor record thanks to new attractions

Museum chief Franziska Zschäck is thrilled: "It was an exceptionally good season." The newly opened houses, the Heinersdorf House and the Abtsbessingen house, attracted a particularly large number of interested parties. The exhibition on the forced relocation in Heinersdorf is very popular and the visitor reviews are consistently positive. The weather also played along, which contributed to a successful craftsman and shepherd's day as well as a well-attended cheese market.

In order to increase visibility, the museum is now also active on social media and has started its own Instagram channel. This should help to achieve new target groups and further increase the number of visitors.

ambitious plans for the future

The winter break does not become a rest period for the museum. Instead, the time is used to carry out important repairs and promote new projects. Zschäck announces: "We will definitely not fall into hibernation. There is enough to do." The construction of the new entrance building has already started, and visitors can watch the construction of two old craftsmen from Fehrtshausen. In addition, the mill, a popular highlight of the museum, will be repaired in early 2025 so that the wings can turn again for the season opening in April.

Preparations for the next season are in full swing, with a special exhibition that can be seen until January, and other exhibitions in the planning. An exciting year is imminent!
