Reading promotes language: Oldenburg library manager gives tips!

Oldenburg, Deutschland - Oldenburg (EPD). In a passionate call to all parents, Heike Janssen, the head of the Oldenburg City Library, demands more time to spend more time with her children. "Just start with it. Reading in everyday life fits," emphasizes the co-organizer of the renowned children's and youth book fair Kibum. She explains that reading aloud not only promotes language development, but also expands the vocabulary of the children- a fundamental basis for their language and reading skills. In addition, it increases reading motivation and concentration and helps the little ones to deal with their emotions better.

Janssen emphasizes that reading can already start with infants. Even if the little ones do not yet understand the stories, looking at picture books in combination with stories conveys a fundamental feeling for the language. "Choose picture books with simple, high -contrast motifs," she advises, since the baby's sense of sight only develops completely in the first months of life. The selection of the reading should always be tailored to the age and needs of the child, whereby the active inclusion of the children is decisive. "If the adults are bored when reading aloud, no enthusiasm can be conveyed," warns Janssen.

The concerns that increasing digitization through gaming and streaming could reduce interest in reading, Janssen does not share. "Studies show that children who like to read also use a colorful mix of the media and navigate competently between them," she explains. A balanced analog-digital media mix can offer children and adolescents "different skills and passenger experiences". Janssen encourages parents to see the reading time as a valuable opportunity to strengthen the bond with their children and at the same time to promote their development.
