AfD stronghold of Thuringia: Moxa and Paska in the political state of emergency!

In the slate mountains in Thuringia, two neighboring villages, Moxa and Paska, caused a sensation during the 2024 local elections, as they turn out to be true strongholds of the alternative for Germany (AfD). In a region in which the villagers know each other personally, they showed themselves strikingly united in their political attitude.

in Moxa, which has been documented since 1295, the remains of history and charm of half -timbered houses are still visible. But past wars have left their traces, and so today only a small community of around 80 people lives in this village. The infrastructural connection by busy roads could be one of the reasons why the population has decreased since the time of Hitler when the number was still 134. It is also interesting that in 2023 the 27-year-old graduate economist Johannes Linke was elected mayor by the AfD, which was considered a political earthquake for Thuringia.

The AfD on the upper - a look at Paska

The neighboring town of Paska has followed Moxa even more scarce with regard to the support of the AfD. In the election of the district council in the Saale-Orla district, the party reached over 60 percent of the vote. Paska, with a population of around 90, has an interesting story; Traces of the Celts testify to a long history of settlement. A grim view of the past shows the grave monument of four concentration camp prisoners who were murdered in 1945, which underlines the dark history of the place.

The AfD in Paska was a clear winner at the 2019 European elections in Paska, where it received 51.7 percent. In the last municipal election, she did 60.9 percent. Such results say more about the political landscape than many words. The residents of these villages have bound to the AfD, and this raises questions about the possible development of regional politics.

It is important to notice that both places have previously made negative headlines aware of themselves because of their proximity to AfD. The developments here cannot be ignored because they represent a significant part of Thuringia, in which the political views are heavily polarized. The pressure to question the existing political balance of power is growing.

insa ZDF mdr
afd 30% 30% 30%

bsw 20% 17% 17%
left 14% 14% 13%
SPD 6% 6% 7%
Greens 3% 4% 3%
FDP 3% - -

These elections clearly show that the political weight of the AfD in the Thuringian slate mountains has grown strongly, which concerns not only the communities themselves, but all of Thuringia. The current surveys indicate a solid image that could be significant for the future and leads the discourse on political identity and belonging in the region. The coming months will show how these developments continue to develop and what role people play in these villages.
