City of Jena decides subsidy: rescue for municipal utilities and local transport!

A historical decision for the city of Jena! For the first time, a grant flows to Stadtwerke Jena GmbH, which are completely owned by the city. While the municipal utility company still distributed an impressive 9.5 million euros to the city in 2019, the grant for 2024 is now only 3.9 million euros. The reasons for this dramatic decline are diverse: rising energy prices, tariff increases and important decisions of the city council, which, among other things, make local transport more attractive and are intended to advance the construction of a leisure pool. Dr. Margret Franz von den Greens praised the holding for the fact that it releases a large part of her losses internally and thanked the around 1,800 employees for their tireless efforts.

investment in the future

Ralf Lenkert from the left described the loss compensation as an essential investment in the future of the city. Local transport, which remains deficient, is of crucial importance for the daily life of the citizens. Bastian Stein from the CDU pointed out that many municipal utilities in Germany are in a similar location due to the energy crisis and increasing costs. The positive annual financial statements of the municipal work group, with a total turnover of 492.7 million euros, sends a strong signal to the lenders and is crucial for future investments, says Christian Gerlitz. The city council unanimously approved the decision.

The group leaving certificate comprises 24 companies in the areas of energy, mobility, living, leisure and services. The turnover is distributed over almost 300 million euros from the sale of electricity, gas and district heating, around 90 million euros from rental services and around 35 million euros from the bathing company. While sales revenues in the living area have risen slightly, mobility recorded an annual misalignment of almost 12 million euros, which is a deterioration compared to the previous year. The bathrooms also remain a subsidy. The city council approved the conclusion without objections.
