On the morning of April 14, 2024, the fire raged and converted the historical tower, which has shaped the cityscape since the 15th century, into a sea of flames. The dramatic pictures of the burning roof shocked the residents and attracted attention nationwide. 55 firefighters immediately moved out to fight the fire, but the flames had already caused great damage. The tip of the tower fell into the inferno and left a rubble field. And that was not the only misfortune on this terrible Sunday: In the old town, further fire blazed and a right -wing extremist smearing was discovered!

The fire led to an immense property damage of 500,000 euros. However, the city is determined against the arsonists: two men, including a 24-year-old Arnstadt, are on the court for arson and other offenses on October 29. "We are pursuing every damage to urban property," emphasizes a spokesman for the city administration. The citizens quickly mobilized and donated diligently for the reconstruction - so far over 90,000 euros have been raised. The city has a new usage concept in the pipeline, which will soon make the Neutorturm accessible to visitors.

Prime Minister Bodo Ramelow provided the city as a support, while the tower's emergency protection is driven forward: A temporary roof protects the wounded walls from rain, and at the beginning of July the fire damage will be completed. The Neutorturm, once a watchtower against the fire, has suffered a dark fate - but hope for reconstruction lives! A storm may have shaken, but the spirit of Arnstadt remains unbroken!
