Glass fiber expansion in Wachsenburg: Netkom jumps off, TGG takes over!

Amt Wachsenburg. shock for the citizens! The fiber optic expansion in the districts of Ichtershausen, Sülzenbrücken and egg skills is about to end! Thuringian Netkom has canceled the plans for further expansion, shortly before completion. A contract that was signed between the municipality of Amt Wachsenburg and Netkom in 2022 is now waste. The construction work that had started a few months ago threatens to run into nothing.

The reasons? Increasing construction prices make it impossible for the netkom to manage the costs out of its own pocket. Mayor Sebastian Schiffer (SSB) said on Wednesday evening that the original promise for the expansion in other districts no longer applies. The financing of the investments should be carried out by household Internet contracts, but now the future of the fiber optic network in the region remains uncertain.

In Thuringia, it is not an isolated case that investors jump off and municipalities have to ensure fiber optic expansion. In order to close this supply gap, the municipal company TGG was launched. This company can be commissioned by cities and municipalities to connect households that cannot be given access to the fiber optic network independently.

The TGG has the option of combining several municipalities into a planning area and applying for 100 percent funding for the development. But the way there is long and arduous, since numerous listening and tendering steps have to be passed through. This means that the expansion often takes much longer than with private companies.

Hope for soon improvement is steamed. If everything runs according to plan and the funding flow, the fiber optic expansion in the districts of Bechstedt-Wagn, Bittstädt, Haar- and Holzhausen, Kirchheim, Rehestädt, Rockhausen, Rohlesee, Thörey and Werningsleben could only begin in 2027. The construction period could then take two to four years. The municipal councils are anything but happy about these long deadlines, but without alternatives they have no choice but to give the TGG the order.
