Hundreds of requests for gender change in Thuringia - a new beginning!

In Thuringia it is bubbling! From November 1st, gender entry and first name can be changed in no time - and people flock to the registry offices! Hundreds of applications have already been received and the numbers are increasing rapidly. In Erfurt alone, 82 people registered, followed by 63 in Jena, 31 in Gera and 28 in Weimar. The excitement is great, while in Eisenach and Suhl the registrations with seven and four are very lean.

The new self -determination law makes it possible! From now on, transgender, intersex and non -binary people can change their gender information without prior report or medical certificates. A simple form at the registry office is sufficient! The relief could not be greater and brings a breath of fresh air to the legal framework that was previously criticized as humiliating. Anyone who already submitted their application on August 1 can even register their new identity on November 1 - a real milestone!

The numbers of the past few years speak a different language. Only about ten gender and name changes were registered annually, which underlines the urgency of the new law. There were only three changes in Weimar throughout 2023, while eleven registrations were received on August 1st. The fees for the registration are relatively low for the final explanation at 20 euros and another 25 euros, which further lowers the hurdle.

The self -determination law, which was decided by the Bundestag in April, replaces the outdated transsexual law and is a step in the right direction. The Federal Constitutional Court had classified the previous regulation several times as unconstitutional and denounced the unsustainable conditions for those affected. Now the time of change has come and the Thuringians are ready to determine their own identity!
