Electricity and gas prices rise: concern about energy costs 2025!

The price sensors raise the alarm: The electricity price index will increase by 14.2 % in January 2025 compared to the previous month, as the Austrian OTS reports. With an index value of EUR 130.19/MWh, this is even 26.9 % above the level of the previous year. The top load prices are also affected and exceed the basic load price by 26 %. In the first quarter of 2025, the electricity price index is expected by 11.2 % compared to the previous quarter, while it remains 10.6 % lower compared to the first quarter of 2024. The current value for the quarterly base is EUR 114.43/MWh.

But the indices also point to the gas: The gas price index will increase by 2.7 % compared to the previous month in January 2025 and has a comparative value of EUR 45.81/MWh. If you look at the quarterly base, an increase of 11.5 % is forecast by 11.5 % in the first quarter of 2025. This index was 44.22 EUR/MWh, which is 4.3 % below the previous year's value. It is important that the gas price index in 2025 increases by 7.6 % compared to October 2024, but also 17.6 % below the value of January 2024, where it was at EUR 41.61/MWh, as is also explained in detail by Destatis.

price development and inflation measurement

While energy prices are increasing, general price development in Germany remains a central topic. The consumer price index (VPI), which measures the average price development for goods and services, is continuously updated by the Federal Statistical Office. The inflation rate, which is often called in connection with the VPI, shows how the prices change over a year and is an important instrument for analyzing the economic situation. These indices enable consumers and economic experts to precisely pursue price development and to react to changes, which means that the effects on consumer behavior and price strategies will be foreseeable in the future.
