The SPD brought in a catastrophic result in the Bundestag election on February 23, 2025, which is classified as a "historical defeat". SPD general secretary Matthias Miersch spoke of a "very bitter evening" and admitted that the party, which was previously involved in the political events, was now on the move of the Union of the CDU and CSU, led by Friedrich Merz.
