Sergio Pérez: Out of the Vice World Champion? The big shock in Qatar!
On December 2, 2024, the Mexican Formula 1 driver Sergio Perez catapulted himself at the Katar's Grand Prix by a disastrous performance by losing control of his vehicle during the safety car phase and leaving. The German "Bild" newspaper described its misfortune as a "tragedy", and reporter Enrico Ahlig asked the question: "What grade should you give a driver who bowled himself from the track during the safety car phase?" Team boss Christian Horner even expressed that Perez had not brought out enough out of the car to get on, which strengthens speculation about a possible separation of the Vice World Champion of 2023. "Hopefully he made it soon," added Horner and indicated that Allenuen will no longer be accepted.
ethical dilemma in autonomous vehicles
At the same time, a current study of the company for ethical decision -making in autonomous vehicles presents society with new challenges. In the survey, which was carried out as part of the online quizza "Moral Machine", millions of users from 233 countries were asked to find out what decisions they would make in fictional accidents. The results show global preferences, such as preference to protect people from animals and, given a dilemma, rather spare the younger ones instead of the older ones. However, scientists warn that the ethical dilemma, whose decisions are not easy to make, must be regulated by law in the future - a topic that is already on the table in Germany. A draft law was discussed here that prohibits any form of discrimination based on age or gender, which could counter the wishes of the population, since many express a preference for the protection of younger people.
While the technology of autonomous vehicles is still in its infancy, experts emphasize the urgency of the discussion about ethical standards in vehicle programming. Patrick Lin, director of the Ethics + Emerging Sciences Group, explains that decisions about programming will have to be made soon and that we urgently need an informed public debate on this matter. "What happens to autonomous vehicles could set the sound for the integration of other AI technologies," says Lin. These dilemmata combine with the current discussion about Perez ’driving skills and raise questions about the responsibility in road traffic, which are relevant for all road users. It remains exciting how these topics will develop, both on the race track and on our streets.
