Wahlstedt will soon be reopened by the theater after 1776 days!
Wahlstedt. A new chapter on the market is imminent! After an almost endless closure of 1776 days caused by the corona pandemic and massive construction problems, the preparations for the large reopening are in full swing. The construction fence may still stand, but the anticipation of the Wahlstedter is tangible. On Sunday, January 12, 2025, the theater will finally open its doors again and receive the spectators with a fresh, modern ambience.
The renovation work turned out to be a true challenge. Originally estimated at 1.8 million euros, the costs exploded to over 4 million euros! Building director Torsten Maaß presented the frightening final invoice of EUR 4,175,450.80 in the construction committee. The problems with the old building fabric, such as a weak foundation and pollutant -stressed soil, contributed significantly to the cost increases. An example: The storage costs for seating shot from 18,000 euros to over 61,000 euros!
Investment in the future
The city is now facing the challenge of dealing with the financial consequences of this costly renovation. Committee Chairman Klaus Harm (CDU) commented: "If we had known that beforehand, we would have decided otherwise." Despite the prospect of over 600,000 euros in funding, the highly indebted municipality remains under pressure. The budget consultations are in progress and the question remains: where can you save without meeting the wrong ones? The uncertainty about the financial effects hovers like a sword of Damocles over the city.
