Salmix celebrates 75 years: The secrets of the popular Salmis from Sievershütten
in Sievershütten, where the small, black salmia chewing have been manufactured since 1949, the Salmix company celebrates its 75th anniversary! These delicious licorice delicacies, which should not be missing in any pharmacy, have established themselves as a true North German cultural asset. Product manager Jonas Mollinga (27) describes them as "honest, northern German, tasty, personable" and emphasizes that production has been taking place in Sievershütten since 1990. Salmix has been part of the Hamburg Pharma Peter since 2006 and contributes to the total turnover with 15 percent. "It is going well with us, we are very satisfied," says Mollinga.
Salmix: The strictly kept recipe
The secret of the Salmis is preserved as well as the recipe from Coca-Cola! The mixture of special oils, salmia and licorice is baked at 80 degrees and processed according to the original recipe. Six employees work in an inconspicuous building on Holstenstrasse under the direction of Ronny Schuldt to produce up to 1.5 tons of this popular candy every day. The production process comprises eight steps, starting with the compilation of the raw materials up to careful quality control.
The main sales markets for the Salmis are still the pharmacies, of which there are still around 17,000 in Germany. But the numbers decrease and Mollinga estimates that around 600 pharmacies will close by the end of the year. To counteract this, Salmix has developed new sales channels, including a pilot project with the Rewe supermarket and a growing online business. The export business, especially in Scandinavian countries, is also booming. "Our goods are very much appreciated there," says Mollinga. To increase demand in Germany, Salmix plans new products that are supposed to meet the different tastes in northern and southern Germany.
