Climate protection or risk? BUND SH warns of CO2 pipeline in northern Germany!

In a dramatic appeal, the BUND for the Environment and Nature Conservation Germany (BUND SH) calls for a rethink in climate policy! Instead of investing millions in risky CO2 pipelines, those responsible should finally rely on natural CO2 memory such as bogs and forests. Ole Eggers, Managing Director of the BUND SH, criticizes the planned CO2 pipeline from Lägerdorf to Brunsbüttel: "Why do we put money into a technology that is only supposed to intercept five percent of emissions? It's time for a paradigm shift!"

The debate about CO2 storage underground has flared up in Schleswig-Holstein. A state parliament decision from 2014 prohibits this practice, but the federal government is now planning a change in the law that should enable billioners CCS technology (Carbon Capture and Storage). While the black and green state government describes this technology as safe, environmentalists warn of the inadequate scientific evidence and the risk that CO2 will be pumped into the North Sea. "We fear that the pipeline is only the beginning to ship CO2 in landfills in Denmark or Norway," explains Lothar Wittorf from the BUND sh.

Dangers from CO2 exit

The risks are alarming! An incident in Brunsbüttel, in which an oil pipeline broke, shows how dangerous gas leaks can be. Carbon dioxide is heavier than air and can lead to suffocation in bottom sinks. In addition, the planned deposit under the North Sea could further damage the fragile ecosystem. "Disapprying CO2 consumes more energy than could be saved by simple measures such as speed limits," says Eggers. Nature needs solutions that use it, not the industry!

The planned pipeline from Lägerdorf to Brunsbüttel is not only a financial risk, but also a threat to the environment. Time is pushing and the voices of the environmentalists are getting louder - it is time to change the course!
