Fehmarn without a pier: Tourism chief warns of step back!

Fehmarn. The dream island with a breathtaking 78-kilometer coastline could soon be without a pier! The plans for the construction of an elegant pier on the south beach, which should offer guests direct access to the sea, are now on ice. The country has now discontinued the funding for new buildings, and that could have fatal consequences for tourism.

Oliver Behncke, the tourism director of Fehmarn, is disappointed. "Our unique selling point is then not to have no pier," he says, while holding the visualization of the planned bridge in his hand. This should be 177 meters long and have two floors that are reminiscent of beach Hairstakers. With an investment volume of 7.3 million euros, the bridge was not only an architectural highlight, but also a planned attraction for tourists.

The pier should become part of a larger project that includes a hotel, beach villas and an underground car park, with a total investment volume of over 200 million euros. But now it looks like the plans fall into the water. Behncke emphasizes that low bridges are always a magnet for tourists and strengthen the region. "We are a year late. Of course that's disappointing for us," continued Behncke.

The decision of the Ministry of Economic Affairs not to promote new buildings is found by Behncke as incomprehensible. Spokeswoman Karen Siksmeyer explains that the buildings are in a sensitive natural area and that the costs have increased significantly in recent years. While other regions such as Timmendorfer Strand are generously promoted, Fehmarn stays on the track. "Public investments result in private investments," warns Behncke, demanding a rethink in order not to endanger the tourist attractiveness of the island.
