Midwifery emergency call on Sylt in danger: Pregnant women worry for help!

The situation for pregnant women on Sylt becomes dramatic: the midwife emergency call is about to come out! The emergency call will not be filled from January to April 2025 after two midwives have terminated. If it does not succeed in filling the positions in good time, the emergency call will be completely stopped from April, similar to 2021. Ulrike Körbs, the chairwoman of the Social Committee, urged this development.

From January 1, 2025, only three midwives will be on duty, since the district has been looking for successors since October. "There is a risk of setting the complete emergency call on the island," says Körbs. The reasons for the dismissals are unclear, but there were apparently contractual difficulties with the North Sea clinic, which led to dissatisfaction with the midwives. In addition, many did not feel sufficiently valued.

Critical location for pregnant women

The impending from the midwife emergency call is the next blow for pregnant women on Sylt. As early as July 2024, two gynecologists stopped working in the North Sea clinic, which further tightened the situation. Dr. Budkowski retired and Dr. Müller did not want to continue the care alone. The clinic ensures that you take care of emergencies, but the uncertainty remains.

A delivery room on Sylt has not existed since 2014, and many children were born under dramatic circumstances - in the ambulance or at home. The chairwoman of the midwife association in Schleswig-Holstein, Anke Bertram, had pointed out these grievances in a fire letter. With the impending from the midwife emergency call, the island is once again faced with a major challenge that urgently needs to be solved.
