The situation for pregnant women on Sylt is becoming increasingly critical! The midwife emergency call on the popular North Sea island remains vacant from January to April 2025 after two midwives have terminated. If it is not possible to fill the positions quickly, the complete setting of the emergency call - a nightmare that was already a reality in 2021! Ulrike Körbs, the chairwoman of the Social Committee, urged the consequences of this development.

From January 2025 there are only three midwives available, since the circle has been looking for replacement since October. "The dismissals are a major problem. If we do not act quickly, the emergency call will not be consistently occupied," said Körbs. The reasons for the dismissals are complex, but there are indications of contractual difficulties with the North Sea clinic. "The activity of the midwives ends at the door of the clinic," says Körbs. This has led to massive dissatisfaction among the midwives, which also do not feel sufficiently valued.

Critical location for pregnant women on Sylt

This alarming situation is the latest setback for pregnant women on Sylt. As early as July 2024, the gynecologists Dr. Zbigniew Budkowski and Dr. Christian Müller hired her work in the North Sea clinic. Budkowski retired, while Müller did not want to continue looking after pregnant women. However, the clinic assured that it will take care of emergencies, and Müller continues his work in a group practice.

The closure of the delivery room on Sylt ten years ago, the situation further tightened. Since then, many women have gave birth to their children in ambulances or even at home, which underlines the urgency of the situation. Ulrike Körbs emphasizes: "The threat of the midwife emergency call is another big problem for women on Sylt. We urgently need to find solutions!"
