Storm flood risk on the Baltic Sea: Lübeck fights against the flood!

Lübeck, Deutschland - The German Baltic Sea coast is haunted by severe storms, and the risk of flooding increases alarming. According to a warning from the German Weather Service (DWD) and the Federal Office for Sea shipping and hydrography (BSH), the water levels can increase up to 1.30 meters above average water level, especially at the Bay of Lübeck and the Wismar Bay. The drama of the situation is already evident, since the trave has stepped over the shore in Lübeck, such as Kreiszeitung reported.

storm flood warnings and floods on the march

The weather on the Baltic Sea is critical. Meteorologists expect heavy rains and gusts of wind of strength 8 to 9, which means that it is stormy weather. The wind speeds that have reached up to 100 km/h on Rügen are alarming, which corresponds to wind strength 10 on the Beaufort scale. These winds press the water onto the coast and thus increase the risk of floods, says weather expert Thomas Globig. Although the forecast water levels have so far been below the critical level of 1.50 meters, there is a noticeable tension on the coasts, since history shows that warnings are often not sufficient. Also NDR emphasizes that the residents in Wismar were asked to remove vehicles from the flood at risk.

The situation is caused by a low height that lies between a low pressure area over Italy and a high -pressure area over the British Islands. Therefore, wind speeds of 85 to 95 km/h can also be expected on Tuesday. Despite the impending danger, there will only be sandbags from a water level of 1.25 meters to control the water levels. Current forecasts for the Lübeck Bay expect a water level of up to 1.10 meters over normal on Monday evening, which could further tighten the situation.
