Fight for freedom: Diaconal work presents Atlas of civil society
In Lübeck, an important event will take place on October 10, 2024. The Diakonisches Werk Schleswig-Holstein invites you to the presentation of the "Atlas of Civil Society" in the community center of the cathedral, starting at 5 p.m. This initiative is a reaction to the declining freedom rights that are subject to an alarming trend worldwide.
Around 6.8 billion people live in countries in which civil society is severely restricted or even combated. This number corresponds to about 86 percent of the global population. Individual freedom rights are often threatened in the states dominated by repressive governments. Critics often experience persecution, detention or worse. This is a challenging reality that makes the Atlas of civil society clear in 2024.
focus on climate activism
A particularly urgent topic in the report is the Situation of climate activists. They are committed to the protection of the environment worldwide, fight against the clearing of forests, land robbery, the construction of oil pipelines and the dangers that emerge from coal and fracking-often under extreme risks for their own security. In 2022, according to the NGO Global Witness, 177 people who fought for environmental protection were murdered, with most cases being documented in Latin America.
Despite these dangers, the climate movement has reached its peak. More and more people are actively committed to climate protection, even if they are often defamed and persecution. The commitment of these activists is not only admirable, but also of crucial importance for the preservation of our environment and the survival of future generations.
At the event in Lübeck, Christine Meissler from Bread will introduce the Atlas for the world and are available for questions. The moderation takes over Dr. Katherine Braun, who works as a consultant for flight and human rights at the ecumenean work of the Nordkirche. This panel discussion offers a valuable opportunity to better understand the current challenges of civil society and find ways to contribute to the protection of human rights.
The fact that the atlas of civil society is presented in such a context underlines the relevance of the topic in today's society. The event is an invitation to all interested parties to be informed first -hand about the serious threats to civil society and the associated problems such as climate protection. It remains to be hoped that such initiatives will lead to more awareness and commitment.
