Burglaries in Ostholstein: How to protect your home effectively!

Lübeck/Eutin. Holger Dabelstein, head of the White Ring Ostholstein, knows from experience: "Those affected fight for a long time with fear and uncertainty." The Lübeck police, represented by the experienced main commissioners Heike Schmidt and Dirk Schäfer, now give valuable tips to protect themselves from the insidious intruders.

Windows are the weak point of many households! "The big screwdriver is the main tool of the burglars," explains Schäfer. Most windows are only secured by simple roller cones that can be easily overcome. The police recommend the installation of mushroom head pins, which offer better protection through their construction. But that alone is not enough: "A lockable window handle is essential," warns Schmidt. Many do not know that the window handle must always be complete to ensure effective protection.

The burglary figures in Ostholstein are alarming! In 2023, burglaries rose by 43 percent to a total of 193 cases. The police offer free consultations to increase the security of citizens. "We make suggestions for improvement and show where there are defects," says Schäfer. The consultations are particularly required in the high season from November to February. Tips such as the use of timeline for light and roller shutters can help to make the house appear inhabited.

The most common burglar methods are the pruning of windows or the "glass", in which burglars try to reach the window handle through a hole in the pane. "A normal perpetrator only has two to five minutes to break in. If it doesn't come in quickly, it gives up," explains Schäfer. Therefore, it is crucial to always complete the doors and pay attention to simple safety precautions in order to deter potential perpetrators.
