Security for cyclists: Kitzeberg curves now shine in the light!

Heikendorf, Deutschland - Heikendorf and Mönkeberg can breathe a sigh of relief! After a long use of the initiative "Light - Lighting of the Kitzeberg curves", the bike path along the Hegeholz street now shines in new light. The 800 meter long bike path was not only more secure, but also wider. Before that only 2.3 meters in the narrowest spots, the path is now widely widened to 2.8 meters. Equipped with 28 modern LED lanterns, which ensure safe visibility, the path is now also secured in the dark morning hours, especially for the students of the Heinrich Heine School in Heikendorf. "We are satisfied with what has now been done," Derek Palm said from the initiative, while the construction work that started in September 2024 has now been completed.

The financing of the project was a decades of struggle. To increase security, the initiative collected signatures and organized large bicycle corsos. "The street lamps are specially programmed to meet the protection needs of the bats," explains Lars Husfeld from the Heikendorf municipal works. The total costs for the Kitzeberger curves amount to around 495,000 euros, with around 372,000 euros from funding from the federal government. The municipality of Heikendorf bears around 120,000 euros from its own resources. The challenge was the approval of the lighting on a habitat of the bats, which was taken into account by special programming of the lanterns.

"It was creepy to drive the Kitzeberg curves by bike in the dark," says Mayor of Mönkeberg, Hildegard Mersmann. The improvements are not only a profit for cyclists, but also a sign of close cooperation between the communities. With the completion, the Kitzeberg curves are now a safe and well -lit section that completes the bicycle infrastructure between Kiel and Neuheikendorf, as Mayor Tade Peetz von Heikendorf proudly sums up. Supporters of the initiative are grateful and express themselves positively about the progress on the website of the initiative .
