Schleswig-Holstein: Now simply register online!

From now on, it will be much easier for the residents of Schleswig-Holstein to make their residence registrations. No longer long queues and no search for an appointment - registration can now be conveniently done online from home. This innovation, which has been implemented since the end of September, enables citizens to digitally register their residence in every municipality in the state. As the State Chancellery reports, the introduction was the result of a successful cooperation between the country, the municipalities and the service providers involved.

Digitization Minister Dirk Schrödter (CDU) emphasized that this new online service is a significant relief for the citizens. "We have made great progress together," he said, emphasizing the smooth cooperation. With the new system, the forms can be filled out and submitted without personal contact, which frees citizens from the elaborate scheduling.

technical requirements and registration process

In order to be able to use the new online service, citizens need a identity card that has the online ID function. For people with foreign citizenship, there is the opportunity to register with an oath card. Registrations are made via a safe portal, which enables the apartment's confirmation to be uploaded. This confirmation is necessary to ensure that the applicant actually lives in the specified apartment. Modern technology is also used here: a smartphone with NFC function serves as a reader and facilitates the registration process.

After successfully completing the online registration, the citizens receive a confirmation that is provided in the download. The Post provides the physical part of the residence registration, the address stickers for the ID cards, directly to the registered addresses. The citizens are then able to attach the stickers themselves.

This innovative solution not only saves time, but also protects the resources of the municipalities. Instead of having to take care of numerous personal appointments, the employees can now concentrate on other tasks, while citizens enjoy freedom to carry out their registrations flexibly at home.

The model could possibly serve as an example for other federal states. In times when digital services are becoming increasingly important, Schleswig-Holstein shows how modern technologies can simplify the administration and everyday life of citizens. The switch to digital processes could also increase the efficiency of the administration in the long term and thus also set new standards.
