Kiel becomes a pioneer: 17.7 million for phosphorus recovery!

A revolutionary project in Kiel takes shape! The state of Schleswig-Holstein has put together an impressive funding package of 17.7 million euros in order to launch the innovative waste burning phosphorus recovery Kiel (MPK). Environment Minister Tobias Goldschmidt (Greens) presented the funding notice in the state capital. The state -of -the -art system, which is to be built by 2028 and put into operation in 2029, will make Kiel a pilot region for the recovery of the valuable raw material phosphorus.

phosphorus is an indispensable part in food production, but extraction is often made under catastrophic conditions and is heavily dependent on a few delivery countries. Goldschmidt emphasizes that the new sewage sludge incineration system with integrated phosphorus recovery not only reduces the dependence on imports, but will also make a significant contribution to climate protection and water protection. "A milestone for gentle resource consumption and the circular economy," said the minister.

Kiel households benefit from CO2-neutral district heating

Kiel's mayor Ulf Kämpfer is enthusiastic about the nationwide importance of the project. With the new sewage sludge burning system, up to 4,000 other households in Kiel could be supplied with CO2-neutral district heating. 17,000 households are currently benefiting from the district heating of the waste incineration plant. The waste incineration Kiel (MVK), a joint venture between the city of Kiel and Remondis, the largest German company for recycling and water management, is the engine behind this future -oriented initiative.
